Glamour style in the bathroom – premium bathroom designs with character

The character of a glamour bathroom is built from noble materials, well-placed light sources and carefully chosen details. Stone, gloss and metallic accents need the right proportions, because in excess they can dominate the interior. In this article we discuss the materials, colours, fittings and lighting typical of a premium bathroom, and point out which decisions are worth making already at the design stage.

What makes a glamour-style bathroom stand out?

A modern glamour-style bathroom resembles an elegant bathing salon. Its character comes from noble materials, carefully chosen details and light that is not limited to its practical function. Although glamour draws on the spectacular interiors of the first half of the 20th century and the Art Deco style, today it does not have to mean furniture dripping with gold, crystal decorations and gloss everywhere. Today, design treats glamour more sparingly. Instead of many decorations come large slabs of marble or stone with distinctive veining, brass, gold or chrome fittings, large-format mirrors and single decorative elements. Gloss is combined with matt surfaces, and light materials with darker accents. As a result, the glamour character remains expressive without relying on an accumulation of ornaments.

Which materials to choose for a premium bathroom?

In a glamour bathroom the materials often act as decoration themselves, so you do not need many of them. The distinctive pattern of stone, metallic fittings or fluted glass can be enough to give the interior character. What matters is combining surfaces of different textures and degrees of gloss. In premium bathroom designs the most commonly used materials are:

  • marble and quartzite – natural veining can become one of the main motifs of the interior; with suitably selected slabs you can also use bookmatch, i.e. arranging adjacent pieces so that their pattern forms a mirror image;
  • large-format porcelain stoneware and sintered stone – allow you to achieve large, uniform surfaces with a limited number of grout lines;
  • brushed brass and metals in a matt gold finish – appear above all in fittings, mirror frames, handles and details;
  • glass and mirrors – reflect light and can visually enlarge the interior, which is especially important with darker colour schemes;

In a glamour bathroom it is also worth planning custom-made built-in storage, which will provide room for cosmetics, towels and other everyday items. With decorative stone, expressive fittings or mirrors, too many things left in view can create visual chaos. Closed storage helps avoid this and shows off the decorative elements of the interior better.

How to choose the colours and lighting for a glamour bathroom?

A glamour-style bathroom does not have to be light or based on gold accessories. White and light stone can be combined with brass, graphite and black with warmer shades of metal, and bottle green with wood. With more decorative materials, however, it is worth showing restraint – if the stone has strong veining and the fittings an expressive finish, the remaining surfaces can serve as a calmer backdrop for them. Light is particularly important in a glamour bathroom, because it reflects off mirrors, glass, polished stone and metallic details, bringing out their colour, gloss and texture. Well-placed light sources let you highlight decorative surfaces while providing suitable conditions for daily grooming. That is why a single ceiling light is usually not enough – it is worth including several types of lighting in the design:

  • general, responsible for even illumination of the room;
  • functional by the mirror, placed so that it lights the face well and limits harsh shadows;
  • decorative and ambient, e.g. in niches, under built-in units or by the bathtub.

By the mirror, wall lights made of milk or fluted glass, models with spherical shades and fittings with brass, gold or chrome details look good. In a larger bathing salon you can also use pendant lamps with glass shades, and in a more decorative arrangement – a small chandelier. The finish of the fittings is worth matching to the taps and other metal details, so as not to introduce too many competing accents.

How do fittings and details build the character of a glamour bathroom?

In larger bathrooms the centrepiece can be a freestanding bathtub. Placed by a window, on the axis of the entrance or against the backdrop of a striking stone wall, it becomes one of the strongest elements of the interior. We used such a solution in the Urocza Residence project, where a black bathtub was showcased against natural materials. The decorative glamour character can also be emphasised with lighting. This is well illustrated by the project of a bathroom with a spectacular chandelier, where the ornamental light fitting draws attention and underlines the representative character of the bathing area. In the shower area, concealed fittings and walk-in cubicles or zones with large glass panels work well, as they do not hide large surfaces of stone or tiles. The colour and finish of the taps are worth matching to the other metal elements, e.g. glass profiles, handles or the mirror frame. Wall and floor coverings also play an important role. One way of using them is shown by a bathroom finished with Porcelanosa tiles, whose geometric patterns refer to Art Deco aesthetics.

Why entrust a glamour bathroom to professionals?

Building a premium-standard glamour bathroom can involve a considerable budget, so the choice of expensive materials and fittings is worth preceding with a well-prepared design. What matters is not only the quality of the individual elements, but also the way they are combined. A designer helps to select stone, tiles, taps and lighting in terms of colours, patterns and finishes. Knowledge of manufacturers, collections and suppliers also makes it easier to find materials that match the assumed concept and budget. With glamour this is particularly important, because many elements are decorative and it is easy to end up with an effect of excess. At Jay Design Studio we prepare bathroom designs in Warsaw and other locations – from the concept and selection of materials to technical documentation and author’s supervision. FAQ

How much does a glamour bathroom cost?

The cost depends on the floor area, the chosen materials, fittings, sanitaryware and the scope of work. Natural stone, made-to-order furnishings and premium fittings can significantly increase the budget, so the exact amount can only be determined for a specific project.

How does a glamour bathroom differ from a classic one?

Glamour makes more use of gloss, metallic details, mirrors, expressive stone and contrasts. In classic interiors, symmetry, traditional forms and more subdued finishes play a bigger role.

Do you have to use gold in a glamour bathroom?

No. Gold and brass are popular, but they can be replaced with chrome, nickel or dark metals. The glamour character can also be built by stone, glass, mirrors and decorative lighting.
